What is its Happiness Impact?

It is a question that does not yet belong to the international language of business, research and public policy.

We believe it should.

Organizations shape our lives every day. They influence our health, our relationships, our learning, our work, our opportunities and our quality of life.

Some make life better. Some make little difference. Some make life worse.

Yet we have no common way of understanding or discussing these differences.

For more than two centuries, we have become increasingly sophisticated at measuring how organizations create prosperity. Financial performance, productivity, customer satisfaction and sustainability all provide valuable perspectives.

But they do not answer one of the most important human questions:

How does this organization affect people's lives?

Building on the intellectual tradition of Adam Smith, Happiness Impact starts from a simple premise: organizations exist to serve human needs. How well they fulfil that role should not be assumed.

It should be understood. It should be measured.

That is why we developed Happiness Impact.

Developed by the Center for Wellbeing, Welfare and Happiness at the Stockholm School of Economics, Happiness Impact is a science-based, consumer-based and internationally scalable framework for measuring how organizations contribute to people's happiness and wellbeing.

It does not assume that organizations have a positive impact. It measures the impact they have.

Our ambition is not to establish another ranking. Our ambition is to establish a new concept.

A concept that becomes part of the international language of business, research and public policy. A concept that encourages leaders to ask better questions. That helps organizations strengthen their positive contribution to people's lives. And that helps society better understand one of the defining questions of our time:

What is its Happiness Impact?

Organizations have learned to measure almost everything. It is time to measure what matters most.
